Big Brother for Android Tablet and Phone
Launched July 7, 2011
(Ran for duration of Big Brother 2011 season)
This app allows users to watch live feeds from the Big Brother House 24 hours a, day 7 days a week, as well as watch show episodes and behind the scenes clips. Big Brother is a Reality TV series that keeps cameras on participants for the entire time they occupy the show house. Bringing these feeds to mobile meant that fans had a 24/7 connection with the show’s cast. The 2011 series premiered on CBS on July 7, 2011 and lasted ten weeks until the live finale on September 14, 2011. The season premiered to a total of 7.89 million viewers.
The project was a bit voyeuristic, but technologically interesting because it involved us integrating with both CBS Interactive and Real Networks, who provided the live streams. It was also our first foray into Android Tablet development. I managed the dev team and worked closely with CBS Interactive and Real Networks from inception through launch.
On our dev team we had guest developer Dr. Phil Nelson who was one of my CS professors during my undergrad years. Phil is a great developer and builds mobile apps with us during the summers to stay on top of the latest trends. He teaches a mobile development class in the winter at Western Washington University.
Ultimately, the project was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed having the chance to bring this live, and completely unfiltered, content to Android users.
